so favre, so good
This business about Brett Favre (pronounced FARve, for reasons unknown to mortal man or, of course, woman) has got my attention. How could it not? It’s all over everything in the media. In the upper Midwest it threatens to eclipse the passion of Michael Jackson.

flawed man, musical genius
He had questionable contact with young men, and he died after consuming a known dangerous substance in what was surely a death wish. Of course not Michael Jackson, (didn’t you know this is the Maestro’s Musings?): it’s Pyotr Il’ich Tchaikovsky.

"Don't like" opera? think again
“La Boheme” is hands down the best opera for people who think they don’t like opera to find out they like it better than they thought. Musetta and her waltz – together with her flirty, devious ways – helps a lot.
veni, vidi, prizes
winners of the Crests and gargoyles contest
The architecture knowledge flew fast and fierce. Guesses were made and memories tapped. But in the end, the ones who knew Duluth~Superior's architectural history best were the ones who went home with the biggest prizes. More

hell's bells—they're no angels
In spite of concerns about possible outbreaks of unruly conduct on the parts of the motorcycle group, I think we can turn this into a learning experience for everyone, especially children and car dealers.
nokomis nights
big city class in a woodsy setting
From the first glance, the Nokomis dining room is classy. Tables are spaced far apart, stainless steel lamps watch overhead, and massive windows stand before the silent lake. Chef-owner Sean Lewis has opened more than one hotel restaurant, and it shows.

bloody weekend
Safe at home on Sunday night, we heard about a shooting in Duluth’s Central Hillside that we learned the next day resulted in the death of one man – bullet in the head – and injury to another – bullet in the thigh.

reviewing a reviewer
Civilians generally assume reviews to be informative and trustworthy, especially when the reviewer is clearly possessed of a large vocabulary and an impressive CD collection. Actual judgment, however, does not seem to be a job requirement.
greysolon ballroom
a 360 Degree virtual tour
Duluth once had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the United States. The luxury and elegance of the early days have had their echos throughout city history, and the Greysolon Ballroom is a reflection of this.
How fast is fast?
A musician's radar gun
The finest performances leave the musical radar gun —Herr Mälzel’s metronome — back in the practice room. To quote Johannes Brahms, “the metronome isn’t worth much, for I myself have never believed that my blood and a mechanical instrument go well together.”

a brush with fame...sort of
The death of actor David “Kung Fu” Carradine (he would be better remembered as David “Woody Guthrie” Carradine) brings to mind an encounter I had in Duluth with his father, the late actor John Carradine. More
Rites of celebration
...and the food that comes with them
Red Velvet Cakes have long traditions at many celebrations. In the southern part of the United States it is referred to as the “Chocolate Cake of the South.”

can bob dylan save the county jail?
Surely preservationists could come up with some link of Dylan with the old St. Louis County Jail. As with the Armory, it wouldn’t take much. More
Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island
slow down and step back in time
There is no hurrying on Mackinac Island. All motorized traffic is banned, which means to get around, visitors have the choice of horse-drawn carriages, bicycles or walking.
Sinfully good
Hell’s Kitchen Brings Back Homemade
When asked about his inspiration, owner Mitch Omer cites two unlikely sources: thieves and magpies. “We take from what we see,” he says. “You take something you know and make it your own.”
Tread (and pedal) Lightly
The importance of staying on the right trail for your sport
Our access to hiking, mountain biking, ATV riding, snowmobiling, running, skiing and horse riding trails is nearly universal. But with that privilege also comes the need to care properly for what we have. Staying on the right trail for your sport is more important than you might think it is.
