Bands to Watch: Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank

It's summer; the breeze is keeping the crowd cool after a hot day. You're sitting in your chair, listening to the catchy, feel-good music and everything seems all right. You can’t help but dance in your seat and tap your foot when you hear the guitar, percussion, and vocals that bring together the music of the Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank.

The Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank is a band comprised of two brothers, Teague and Ian Thomas Alexy, who started the group just because they enjoyed playing music and hanging out. They classify themselves as an American folk blues duo, however, they made a moniker for themselves called “dirty folk n roll” and they believe that encompasses their style. They are both songwriters and write a great variety across the genres. The group is inspired by “simplicity [and] longevity.” When they started the group they listened to The Band frequently which gave them some ideas for their own music, although they have a different style.

They started their own record label in 2003 and have released over a dozen records. Their most recent release was Teague Alexy’s solo record “This Dance” which was produced by Twin Cities ace record producer Erik Koskinen. On November 2nd (the Day of the Dead) Ian Thomas Alexy will release his next record, “Born On The Day Of The Dead.” They hope to have a new Hobo Nephews record out in the spring of 2013.

According to Ian Thomas, “Every day is an adventure when you tour and do music for a living.” The daring Hobo Nephews have been touring and playing shows a little closer to home. They recently put on a festival called The Northern Train Festival in Holyoke, MN, behind the town hall. (Holyoke is 30 miles south of Duluth on highway 23.)

As for the future of The Hobo Nephews, they plan to keep making a living with their music and they want to reach more people. With their new record out this spring they will be back on the road.
