Former Curator Peter Pruett was recently promoted to Director of Animal Management at the Lake Superior Zoo. Peter joined the zoo two years ago from Zoo Atlanta where he served as lead keeper of African hoof stock. Previously he worked at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia as a biology department lab manager, Oklahoma State University as an associate lab coordinator of freshmen biology and Tulsa Zoo as large mammal swing keeper. Peter graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. He has two children, Lili, 11, and Autumn, 7.
What is your most marked characteristic?
My laugh.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My two wonderfully crazy girls.
When and where were you happiest?
I am most happy right now here in Duluth at the Lake Superior Zoo.
What is your greatest regret?
I do not believe in regrets and refuse to have any.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Sitting in a rocking chair on the porch with the one I love and listening to the girls laughing or arguing. That’s what the girls do, laugh and argue.
What is your most treasured possession?
The three lovely ladies in my life.
Where would you most like to live?
On a farm with goats.
What is your greatest fear?
Losing those three lovely ladies.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I at times can be very quick to judge certain types of individuals and as a result I am very terse and rude to them.
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Their overblown sense of entitlement.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Ambition. Ambition can very easily turn to avarice.
What is your greatest extravagance?
I like books.
What’s on your iPod?
My iPod contains a large collection of stoner/fuzz rock, an equally large section of punk rock, some garage rock and a little Waylon Jennings.
What is your favorite journey?
My life.
What is it that you most dislike?
Liver and onions and the people who refuse to question and learn.
What is the quality you most like in a man?
Humility.
What is the quality you most like in a woman?
Courage and strength.
What do you most value in your friends?
Understanding and acceptance.
If you were to come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be?
An Asian elephant with bad-ass tusks.
How would you like to die?
I would like to die happy.
