Web Exclusive: Dress For Your Body Type
(We did not actually interview Anne Hathaway for this story.)
In our April issue, we covered how to enhance your looks, whether your body looks like an hourglass, an arrow shaft, or a pear. Here, we cover four more body types: spoon, top hourglass, oval, and diamond.
Spoon
Like the Pear, the spoon body type also has a smaller upper torso but the hips create a sort of shelf below a noticeable waistline. If you’re a spoon, you want to draw attention to the upper body and de-emphasize the tummy and hips while playing up your diminutive waistline. Since your calves and forearms are generally well-formed, feel free show off those legs with shorter skirts and arms by wearing three-quarter length sleeves.
Top Hourglass
This body type has a distinctive waist with a larger bust than hips. If you’re the modest type, you might want to draw attention away from your generous bust, instead accentuating your enviable waist and graceful hips. Select cuts of clothing that visually balance your lower half. For instance, wear a draping tapered long top with a loose belt over a skirt or pants. The skirt might be gathered and the pants pleated. Because you have great legs, you will look striking wearing any skirt length.
Oval
Ovals have narrow hips, ample breasts, and flat buttocks. De-emphasize your midsection and create an illusion of a more defined waist by choosing skirts and pants that add curves and fullness to your lower body and tops that taper to a waist. The oval has amazing legs and should freely show them off without going too short, to avoid a top-heavy look.
Diamond
Your hips are broader than your bust and shoulders and you have an undefined waist. You will want to balance your upper torso with your hips. Create a waist by choosing clothing styles that visually add fullness to your upper body. Hunt for pants and skirts that will lean and lengthen your lower body. Show off your shapely arms and great legs.
Now get out there and look (and feel!) your best!
