Be A Spa VIP

Going to the spa should be an amazing treat no matter who you are; but knowing a few tricks of the trade could make your next visit even more fabulous. Here’s how to get the VIP treatment you deserve…

Plan ahead. Spas are least busy on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Book a service on one of these days and your technician is likely to have more time to spend focusing on you. You may even get to upgrade your service at a reduced rate if she’s looking to fill her books. Avoid holidays like Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day and skip Saturdays unless you want to battle with bridal parties.

Take advantage. People cancel spa appointments all the time. If you want a prime appointment time but don’t want to wait for months, ask to be placed on the waiting list. Highly desirable evening slots are usually the first to go. If you can swing last-minute scheduling, the wait list is a great option.

Arrive early. If you are fashionably late, your treatment will be shortened accordingly. If it’s your first time at the spa, arrive a bit earlier to fill out paperwork and take a tour of the facilities.

Name drop. It pays to have an inside man (or woman). If you know one of their regular clients, make sure you tell them that “so-and-so” highly recommended booking an appointment. And then become a regular yourself by booking your next treatment before you leave.

Be considerate. When you’re at the spa, act like it. Turn off your cell phone, and leave your laptop at home. Not only will this make your spa experience more relaxing, it will allow fellow spa-goers to enjoy their services as well. It will also earn the respect of your technician. Nothing raises an eyebrow quicker than the guest who chats away noisily on her cell phone while others are trying to relax.

Mind your schedule. Try to arrange your visit so that you don’t have to rush off to a meeting or to the kids’ soccer game immediately afterward. Ideally, you should be able to go home and continue the Zen experience at home with a little peace and quiet.

Dress accordingly. High heels and pencil skirts have no place at the spa. Wear comfortable clothes and flats. If you’re coming from work, bring a change of clothes with you for after your services. You won’t want to put those pumps back on after a relaxing pedicure.

Take care of your technician. If you enjoyed your visit, let her know. You’d be surprised how often guests forget to give a genuine “thank you.” And don’t forget the gratuity. Fifteen to twenty percent is standard. If you have a gift card, ask whether a gratuity was included.

Spread the word. The highest compliment you can pay to your spa technician is to refer your friends. And it’s a win-win: she gets new guests, and you get grateful friends.

Be fabulous. Once you’ve put all these tips to good use, become a regular yourself. Periodic visits to the spa will not only keep you looking great, you’ll feel like a true VIP. Go ahead… You deserve it!
