Be Part of History and Share Your Stories
The St. Louis County Historical Society is comparing two epidemics that affected the Northland and wants your personal recollections to be part of it. Do you have a personal story of what it was like during the 1918 Flu Epidemic? Or do you have recollections of the 1980’s AIDS Outbreak? Will you share what it is like now, living with HIV in the Northland? The St. Louis County Historical Society is looking for stories, artifacts, photos and memorabilia. These stories will be featured in the Nowhere to Hide exhibit opening at the Depot this upcoming World AIDS Day, December 1st, 2008.To share your stories and materials, please call Maggie Kazel at 218.720.6385.

Mental Health Support Group
The Mental Health Association of MN sponsors a support group for people who have mental illness who want to be in a supportive group setting. The group meets twice monthly on the first and third Thursday from 5p-7p at Miller Dwan Medical Center, 502 East 2nd Street. Meeting room 1-3, lobby level, eastside. It’s free and confidential. Be a part of the puzzle…Puzzle PEACE!
Puzzle PEACE, the Northland Interfaith Youth Choir, is into its new “groove” of singing together on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at Peace United Church of Christ (UCC), 1111 N. 11th Ave. E. in Duluth. They are planning to sing 1-2 times in Nov. and Dec. and will accept new singers through Nov. 9. If you are interested in singing for PEACE, you are welcome to join them, and bring a friend! Volunteers Needed for Aquatics Program
The Arthritis Foundation is searching for volunteers that are interested in leading Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Programs in their communities. There will be an aquatic training program on Saturday, September 27 from 8:30a to 4:30p at the Duluth Clinic Fitness and Therapy Center, 402 East 2 Street, Duluth with a complimentary lunch provided. North Country Independent Living — Empowering People with Disabilites
North Country Independent Living’s program helps people with disabilities get funding for purchases of adaptive telecommunications equipment and beginning internet costs. Examples are amplified telephones and other devices for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, telephones with large keypads for people who have low vision or are blind and voice activated dialers for people with motion impairments. Can You Sing?
It’s time to get your groove on and have fun with the Holiday season. We are looking for singers interested in gathering for a little holiday caroling on December 4th and 18th in the buildings they work in, in Downtonw Duluth. As little as 10 minutes on each of these days would bring smiles and a festive mood to your friends and co-workers. Spaghetti Dinner Benefit for 4 month old Isabel Radke of Two Harbors
Four-month-old Isabel Radke of Two Harbors has a rare congenital disease called DiGeorge Syndrome, as well as Spina Bifida. There is no cure for this syndrome. Proceeds from this fundraiser will help defray the mounting medical costs. There was a Spaghetti Dinner, silent auction and bake sale on Thursday at the Re-Union Hall in Silver Bay and a fund has been set up at North Shore Federal Credit Union. Marshall Drama Department’s “Out of Our Father’s House”
Enjoy entertainment at it’s best with the Marshall Drama Department’s “Our of Our Father’s House” today and November 1 at 7p, with a matinee performance on November 2 at 2p. “Bat Boy” the Musical at the College of St. Scholastica
The College of St. Scholastica opens its 2008-2009 theater season with “Bat Boy: The Musical” at 7:30 p.m. and midnight Friday, Oct. 31, in the St. Scholastica Theatre on campus. Other performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1, 6, 7 and 8 as well as at 2 p.m. Nov. 9 and 11. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 for senior citizens and non-St. Scholastica students (with identification),and $5 for St. Scholastica students. A Crime Wave Is Coming to Two Harbors
A crime wave is coming to Two Harbors on October 31st at 7pm, featuring William Kent Krueger, Ellen Hart and Carl Brookins at the community center. The program is free and is sponsored by the Two Harbors Public Library and the friends of the Library. There will be a book signing after the event.

Douglas County Historical Society Halloween
Have fun this Halloween while doing something great for the Douglas County Historical Society. Beginning at 6:30p on October 31, for ONE NIGHT ONLY on the upper floor of the Elk’s Club, 1503 Belknap Street…enjoy 60’s and 70’s music from “The Returnables”. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, plus special beer from the Thirsty Pagan Brew Pub. There will be a silent auction and a prize for the best costume. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Douglas County Historical Society, so don’t miss it! Wisconsin Residents Encouraged to Receive Flu Shot
The Douglas County Department of Health and Human Services has scheduled the flu vaccination clinics for the general public. On October 31 from 9a to Noon, adults and children can get their flu shots at the Solon Springs Community Center, Old Business 53 in Solon Springs. Price for adults is $21, children between the ages of 6 months and 18 may receive a FREE vaccine. The Pneumonia vaccine is also available at a cost of $48. For more information call 395.7358.

The Vineyard Church’s Harvest Party

Swedish Meatball Benefit Dinner for David White
There will be a Swedish Meatball Dinner to benefit David White who was recently diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. First Annual Gales of Lakeshore
Lakeshore, 4002 London Road, will host the first annual Gales of Lakeshore on Saturday, November 1, from 10 am to 4 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. Visit the spectacular senior living campus, view the art & craft sale featuring more than 50 vendors selling everything from holiday décor and fine art to precious stone jewelry and furniture. There will also be live entertainment throughout the day and a food court luncheon with delicious sandwiches and pie a la mode. In addition, Perkins pies will be on sale; visitors can take them with or pre-order for the holidays and support a great cause. Campus tours will also be available!

St. Benedict’s Parish Beef Dinner
The annual parish beef dinner at St. Benedict’s, 1419 St. Benedict Street (corner of Kenwood and Arrowhead), is scheduled for Sunday, November 2 from 11a-3p. A menu featuring old-fashioned roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, coleslaw, rutabagas, relishes rolls, dessert, coffee and milk will be available for $8 per adult, $6 for children 10 and under or $28 for families with children under 18. The parish IS handicapped accessible and take out orders are available!

Open House for the Senior Stage

The band Cloud Cult will perform at The College of St. Scholastica at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the lower level of Tower Hall. Psychologist Don Streufert will give a talk called “Finding Forgiveness” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Mitchell Auditorium at The College of St. Scholastica. The event is free and open to the public.

Sharing Indian Culture from East and West
Everyone is invited to a sharing between Anishanabe people and East Indian people Thursday, November 13th at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth, 835 W. College Street. Registration is at 5:45 p.m., dinner at 6:00 p.m., and program at 7:00 p.m. Come and enjoy two beautiful cultures, with food for body and spirit. The menu includes wild rice, fry bread, and blueberry soup (American Indian foods) and chicken tikka masala, navratan korma, and basmati rice, and kheer (East Indian foods), while speakers talk about the different culture and spiritual practices. Cost is $15 at the door; no charge for children twelve and under. Free childcare will be provided.

Lunch with the History People
You’re invited to an enlightening presentation titled “The 2008 Election in Historical Perspective” by Craig Grau at this month’s Lunch with the History People. 9th Annual First Witness Child Abuse Resource Center’s Bake Sale
The 9th Annual First Witness Child Abuse Resource Center’s Bake Sale will be held on Friday, November 14 from 8a-4p on the second floor of the Holiday Center, in the Wells Fargo skywalk entrance and the Technology Center. Purchase home-made fudge, muffins, rolls, breads and candy, all to fund a most important cause in our community.
