Summer Trend Guide: Printed Pants
They say with great power comes great responsibility, and with being stylish comes the challenge of staying on trend. Each new season brings with it new trends, new styles, new colours, fabrics, cuts... the list goes on. Being stylish involves knowing what the new trends are, which ones to take and which to leave, and how to wear them without compromising your own unique style. My next mini series will be guiding you through some of the hottest trends of the summer season, and how to wear them with the wardrobe you already have the style you already possess. From summer's soft pastels to bright neons, from mullet hems to Gatsby-inspired drop-waisted dresses, each week I will be exploring a new trend for the season and bring you tips on the easiest and most stylish ways to wear each one.
This week, we're exploring the printed pants
Printed pants? Yes, hear me out. As a typical pear shape, the thought of printed pants used to fill me with dread. I couldn't imagine why I would want to draw attention to the bottom half of my body. But then I saw more and more pairs of printed pants on blogs, in magazine and all over the internet. They seemed so wearable. So easy. Not as terrifying as I'd previously thought. So I bought a pair. And I loved them. They are probably one of my favourite things I have ever bought. All they demand is a simple, neutral coloured top as they do all the talking. And talk about COMFORTABLE. Yes, they look like pajamas, but the good news is they feel like them too! Here are my top tips for wearing printed pants...
-
Choose a fit and fabric similar to the pants you normally wear
Love skinny jeans? Look for some printed skinny jeans. More of a bell-bottoms girl? Hunt out flared printed pants. Sticking to a style you normally wear will mean you'll have more of an idea how to wear them, and how they'll work with the rest of your clothes.
-
Start out with a neutral colour and simple print
Because I'm bottom-heavy, I started out with a pair of trousers that are black with tiny white swans on them. The ditsy print and neutral background is more flattering and subtle than starting out with a bright floral pair.
-
Pair with a simple or neutral top to start
A plain white tshirt is a perfect accompaniment to a pair of printed trousers, or a tank top in a colour incorporated in the pants. Let your pants do the talking! Once you feel more comfortable you can experiment with mixing print or introducing additional colours
-
Keep proportions in mind
Tight, skinny trousers demand a loose top, and baggy, pajama-style pants look best with a tighter top half.
-
Smarten up with a jacket
A blazer or leather jacket can keep printed trousers looking tidy and pulled together, keeping the look a little more sophisticated.
-
If in doubt, start with shorts
If you don't feel 100% comfortable in printed trousers, start with printed shorts. They're a great introduction to the trend without being as bold as pants.
