Summer Trend Guide: Mullet Hem
They say with great power comes great responsibility, and with being stylish comes the challenge of staying on trend. Each new season brings with it new trends, new styles, new colours, fabrics, cuts... the list goes on. Being stylish involves knowing what the new trends are, which ones to take and which to leave, and how to wear them without compromising your own unique style. My next mini series will be guiding you through some of the hottest trends of the summer season, and how to wear them with the wardrobe you already have the style you already possess. From summer's soft pastels to bright neons, from mullet hems to Gatsby-inspired drop-waisted dresses, each week I will be exploring a new trend for the season and bring you tips on the easiest and most stylish ways to wear each one.
This week we're exploring the mullet hem.
The mullet hem- also know as a high-low hem or waterfall hem, is a dress or skirt (or also a shirt), that has a longer hem at the back than the front (hence mullet hem!). It's a trend that has been growing in popularity of the last few months and is absolutely perfect for summer. These light, airy dresses have the laid-back cool of a maxi, but don't necessitate high shoes and are as easy to wear as a short dress. You also don't have the added worry of accidentally flashing your underwear like you do in a mini, or falling over your dress in a maxi! It's the perfect multi-purpose dress and can be worn for day or for night with a few tweaks. This style is on-trend enough to just be paired with a simple pair of sandals and a jacket and still look “done.” Here are my top tips for wearing the mullet hem.
-
If you're trying a mullet-hem skirt, remember proportions.
Most mullet-hem skirts are loose and flowing, so pair with a more fitted top for balance.
-
Have fun with your shoes!
Unlike the maxi, you can see your shoes with the mullet-hem so pick something cute and fun!
-
Leg lengthening as standard= perfect for short girls!
There's something about this style of dress that makes your legs look a mile long— and I'm not complaining! Many short girls feel uncomfortable in a maxi or midi, so this is a perfect go-between, and you can get those pins out too!
