Reflections on 11/11/11: The Ignominious Final Salute to an Ancient UniformI finally said good-bye to my dad's ancient WWI uniform after many attempts to find an honorable home for it. My father served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a training sergeant stationed at a base in California. Before boarding ships to the front in France, along came 11/11/18 (armistice) and his unit was kept stateside. All of this took place long before I was born but his uniform followed him–and eventually me–until I gave it a final farewell. |

Trick or treat, smell my feetGrowing up, I longed for the old days of Halloween pranks described by my parents, the most prominently mentioned being the tipping over of outhouses. But by the time I aged a bit and made it to the Halloween rounds there were no outhouses in our neighborhood to tip over, so we made do with soap, which we used only that once. I’m a Halloween prankster failure, looking back on it. |

True confessions of a phonophobeNo Twitter, Tweets or Facebook for me. I still use the land-line telephone, so rich in a history of party lines, operators and fascinating names for telephone exchanges. And yet... I'm a phonephobe–one who resists or even fears using the phone. |

Lew Latto: Memories of a 65-year friendshipMy friend broadcaster Lew Latto is dead. As youths growing up together, I could not help but notice how Lew seemed to straddle two worlds like no one else I knew. With his friends he was a fun-loving, sometimes mischievous teenager, but at the same time he was an adult, working on the air in radio, dealing with station managers and producers and operating in the adult world. |
