The Norwegians have their lutefisk, and the French have their frog legs. Americans? We love our burgers. Put warm, chewy beef on a lightly-toasted bun, and magic begins to happen. Conjure up some American charm of your own at these three Northland burger hubs.

Dresden in Winter

Dresden in Winter

Guten Tag! That’s “hello” in German, at least in theory. In practice, you keep a grumpy silence, complete with pursed lips and ice-cold stare. However, this phrase still makes for a wonderful, incredibly cheesy, appropriate introduction. Dresden is a beautiful city, and its restaurants, landmarks, and hotels are well worth seeing.

In essence my journey on the Beargrease trail was simply
from sunrise to sunset. But somehow, as though in
a Harry Potter novel, I was caught in some type of time warp
that turned a day into a magical experience. The Beargrease
has changed me.

Stop the Racquet!: Racquetball in the Twin Ports

Stop the Racquet!: Racquetball in the Twin Ports

Two weeks ago, I found myself engaged in an athletic competition with a man over the age of seventy—and I lost. I not only lost, but I scarcely managed to salvage one point in a match to fifteen points. I am a young person, and a decent athlete at that. How, then, did I find myself in the depths of such embarrassment? It was racquetball I was playing, and on the racquetball court, age does not matter.

How To Give A Gift

How To Give A Gift

The greatest gift,” Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “is a portion of thyself.” That’s all well and good, but most people on our list want presents. But finding just the right thing can be a puzzle. We’ve all heard stories that make us go “aww”—the jewelry given by candlelight, the long-lost heirloom found again, the red bike under the Christmas tree. Here are a few ideas for making your gift-giving memorable this holiday season.

The Don Ness Story

The Don Ness Story

At age 34, Don Ness is still considered by some to be a boy wonder – surprisingly young to be the leader of Minnesota’s fourth-largest city. “I run into people on a regular basis who used to be a babysitter and changed my diapers,” Duluth’s new mayor says with a smile, embracing with modesty a typecast he must be growing weary of. Climbing the couch next to him is his daughter, Eleanor, about to interrupt and ask him to read her a story. His son, James, is upstairs sleeping. Ness is clearly on the other end of the diaper changes these days.

Dr. Dad: Strep Throat

Sitting on the edge of Greta’s bed, I am just about fi nished tucking her in for the night. One of her windows is open just a crack, letting in the pleasant mixture of coolness and rich, earthen scent so characteristic of October. Though Greta has steadfastly refused to give up her summer pajamas for [...]

Jim Heffernan: Soup To Nuts

Jim Heffernan: Soup To Nuts

Many people ask me exactly what I did in my former storied career as a distinguished journalist. “What exactly did you do in your former storied career as a distinguished journalist?” they ask. I tell them I wrote editorials – the opinion pieces newspapers publish so that the waiting public will know what to think about stuff – for many years. “What did you write editorials on?” is a frequent follow-up question. I tell them “everything from soup to nuts”. As an example, I offer the following views on soup and nuts.

Super Bowl Baked Beans

Super Bowl Baked Beans

Now as much as I love the ease and throwback taste of pasteurized french onion dip and a bag of ruffled potato chips, my Super Bowl party guests and hosts have come to expect me to show up with a little bit more than my own personal giant bag of greasy potato chips. These beans are easy, delicious, and almost healthy.
