ECO Provides Earth-Friendly Options
March 17, 2010 · Leave a Comment
For a home store, Eco is surprisingly soothing. Instead of a harsh smelling stack of vinyl, there’s a small shelf of flower-scented lotions. Instead of an aggressive, warehouse-white color scheme, there are calming, earth-tone pastels. Instead of mass-produced, environmentally destructive building materials, Eco provides “Environmentally Conscious Options” (hence the store’s name). And according to owner Julie McDonnell, choosing those options is easier than ever.

Cooking With Deb: Not your mama’s mac and cheese
March 17, 2010 · Leave a Comment
As children of the 70s, boxed mac and cheese was a staple in our home. The box contents filled us with wonder that a little packet of orange powder could become creamy orange cheese. Even my granny, who butchered her own chickens and grew her own herbs, succumbed to the processed ease of boxed mac and cheese.

Scaling Ice: A Strange and Local History
March 13, 2010 · Leave a Comment
We human beings amuse ourselves in such strange and silly ways. We seek out danger, concoct exhausting endeavors, and invest our surfeit of time, money, and self-regard in recreation that amounts to re-creation of adversity.
We justify resource-sapping flights, road trips, and gear; we consume far more than our fair share of calories; we trample more terrain than we’re willing to admit; all to identify ourselves as runners, cyclists, skiers, backpackers, surfers, sailors, paddlers, climbers, or practitioners of other pursuits. We’re pointlessly adventurous fools. No different, really, from folks who get high through shopping, eating, or most other distracting obsessions. The universe, if it notices, laughs equally at us all.

The Norwegians have their lutefisk, and the French have their frog legs. Americans? We love our burgers. Put warm, chewy beef on a lightly-toasted bun, and magic begins to happen. Conjure up some American charm of your own at these three Northland burger hubs.

Two weeks ago, I found myself engaged in an athletic competition with a man over the age of seventy—and I lost. I not only lost, but I scarcely managed to salvage one point in a match to fifteen points. I am a young person, and a decent athlete at that. How, then, did I find myself in the depths of such embarrassment? It was racquetball I was playing, and on the racquetball court, age does not matter.

The greatest gift,” Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “is a portion of thyself.” That’s all well and good, but most people on our list want presents. But finding just the right thing can be a puzzle. We’ve all heard stories that make us go “aww”—the jewelry given by candlelight, the long-lost heirloom found again, the red bike under the Christmas tree. Here are a few ideas for making your gift-giving memorable this holiday season.

At age 34, Don Ness is still considered by some to be a boy wonder – surprisingly young to be the leader of Minnesota’s fourth-largest city. “I run into people on a regular basis who used to be a babysitter and changed my diapers,” Duluth’s new mayor says with a smile, embracing with modesty a typecast he must be growing weary of. Climbing the couch next to him is his daughter, Eleanor, about to interrupt and ask him to read her a story. His son, James, is upstairs sleeping. Ness is clearly on the other end of the diaper changes these days.

At The Movies: Wonderland, Wild Things, and Wizards (Oh My)
Another Oscars has come and gone. I’m just now removing my head from the sand after my very poor 15 out of 24 showing from my previous prediction posts. There were so many wonderful moments from the telecast, and many of the nominated and winning films are increasing their exposure. If you get the chance, be sure to head on over to the Zinema theater to catch Jeff Bridges’ now Oscar golden performance in Crazy Heart. Also two Best Picture nominees are new on DVD this week: Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” By Sapphire, and Up in the Air.
